About the Challenge

For years, reading has been in a general decline. This began with the invention of the radio and the television and is now exacerbated by the ability to stream and download. A child who might once have looked to books as a source of entertainment is now directed to a multitude of electronic devices instead. eReaders aside, the damage to the literary word seems irreversible.

To combat this problem, we, The Readers, have pledged ourselves to completing as much of the 52 Book Challenge as possible before December 31st, 2011. The rules are simple: Read 52 books of non-required reading during the calendar year, averaging one per week. The books may be re-reads, but they must be age appropriate.

In a world of overstimulating digital media, its important to remember all that the written word has to offer. Its easy to get caught up online, but the 52 Book Challenge will help us return to our roots. This blog shall document our progress and our thoughts.

Many of us began this challenge in January; others are only just beginning.
